Kitchen Remodel

When we moved to SLC from AZ 2.5 years ago...Sia and I made a list of what we wanted in our new house. Our house in AZ was a big house for AZ standards: 3 bedrooms, an office, completely open floor plan, 15 ft. ceilings, huge master suite, and basically on the golf course in a very nice neighborhood. We wanted much of the same open feeling in SLC. Our list included: contemporary architecture, we knew we would have to be South (we hoped Cottonwood Heights) near the mountains, a view, 4 bedrooms and an office or 5 bedrooms, I wanted a formal living and dining room, and the yard needed to have space for a garden. We got almost everything except the view...which we traded for being in the back of a circle. There were some things inside that we knew right away we wanted to change...first, THE KITCHEN. Even before we made the purchase, when I told Helen, "I found our house!" She said, "I know that house...what was it I didn't like? Oh yeah...the pink tile!" Say good-bye to that 80's color mauve tile. No more dropped ceiling, no more oven in the middle of everything, no more eating at the bar that's not a bar and never using the table, no more only using the dining room twice a year...all that is about to change.

We have been underconstruction 10 days now and I am sooo excited every day when I get home from work.

This has been a very long process. We met with Scott over a year ago, March 2007 just to get the ball rolling. Scott wasn't able to get back with us until November 2007 and we have been meeting with him at least once a month, if not more to get this project underway since then. Scott is an amazing contractor and I think also part social worker/marriage counselor too. Every detail, every decision has been discussed and reviewed and his best advise to us was, "A remodel is a series of compromises to get exactly what you want." Sia has been supportive of what I insisted on...wall oven, and the look of the vent, I have been supportive of the wine fridge and the tv he has insisted on. But the constant decisions are sometimes painful. All decisions had been pretty smooth until the granite...ahhh the granite was really really hard to decide. Looking at huge slabs and picturing how they will look in our kitchen has been a tremendous undertaking. I am thankful for Scott, his patience and his experience and I am hopeful the granite we picked will turn out fine.
Only a few more decisions: back splash, pendent lights, bar stools, sink and fixtures, disposal and water softener. That seems like a lot after I list it. OHH I just can't wait until it's all done. I killed the microwave in the basement this morning so the need to get back to normalcy is really necessary.
